If your greatest asset is your home it stands to reason that making important capital improvements will increase its value. These improvements are also vital to your enjoyment of your home as you age. Aging in place is a growing trend. Baby Boomers are still a big population segment and the own their homes. As a designer my chief role is problem solver. This New Jersey residence benefitted from a renovation of its first floor to allow for its owners to live if needed on one floor. Shown here is the before, during and after of their family room.

The fireplace wall was completely redone and the floor which was originally lower than that of the kitchen was raised for safety reasons. Other areas of the first floor that were renovated were the dining room, which became a bedroom; the powder room which became a full bath with zero entry shower; and the pantry area. To the pantry we added a stackable washer and dryer and a small powder room.
